Along with Buddhists all over the world, this year again, on the 8th day of the fourth month according to the lunar calendar, the practitioners of the International Zen Temple will celebrate Shakyamuni Buddha's birthday. This year the 2555th anniversary of his birthday falls on the 28th May.

On this great event, the solemn ritual of Su Ge Shick takes place, in which lay people receive the five Buddhist vows. This year, it is already the twelfth time that this special ceremony is celebrated at the international Zen-Temple in Berlin under the guidance of the Venerable Zen Master Young San Seong Do.

To prepare for this important religious festival, to which all members and friends of the International Zen Temple and their guests are invited, all practitioners should strive in a special way to purify their minds.

The Lotus Lanterns

The lotus flower, which reveals its wonderfully perfect flower out of the murky waters, has always been a symbol of Buddha's enlightenment and stands for His pure and benevolent mind.

Following a 1000 year old tradition in Korean Buddhism, the Lotus lanterns are built by hand in the International Zen Temple for the celebration of Buddha's birthday and are then hung in the main halls of the temple.

Members and friends of the Temple who are not able to personally participate in the preparation of the lotus lanterns can also acquire them through a donation, which is linked to a personal wish for whose fulfilment the Venerable Zen Master Young San Seong Do will pray.

Participation in the preparatory event of making and offering the lotus lanterns creates great blessings for all participants, their families and personal environment...

The Diamond-Sutra
Wisdom beyond words
From: Hynun Jung

15.08.2011

The buddhistic teaching shows the way to enlightenment. The wisdom beyond words can be gained by mediation. How we therefore have to proceed - i.e. with an advanced acknowledgement - how we must subdue our mind and abide, the Buddha explains in the Diamond Sutra. He does not describe a theory of epistemology but instructs a practice of cognition. It can only be excercised by meditation.

The text of the Diamond-Sutra should be read and understood as a hint to join the practice of a Zen-Temple under the guidance of a Zen Master.

With best regards,

Hyun Jung

The Diamond-Sutra
Profound Sutra

02.06.2011

I practice Zen regularly in the International Zen Temple. This Zen Temple has recently released a very beautiful book edition of the Diamond Sutra, which I like to bestow upon you.

The Diamond Sutra is the record of an instructive dialogue between the historical Buddha and Subbhuti, one of his most imortant disciples, in front of the more than one thousand monks who were attending. In this conversation, the Buddha deals with the ultimate question of existene affecting all human beings, no matter what religious affiliation, personal philosophy or way of life they might have.

The contents of this profound sutra can hardly be fully fathomed or comprehended. This, of course, os also true for myself, although I now understand this text maybe a little bit better than I did earlier, at the beginning after having studied it for quite a long time with much joy and much benefit.

In Asia, this opus has been extraordinarily well-known and widespread throughout many centuries. A Chinese copy of the Sutra from 868 AD, the so-called Tun Huang Print, is one of the most ancient printed books that presently exist in the world. In Mahayana Buddhism, which is prevalent expecially in China, Korea, Japan, Tibet, this Sutra is one of the very Hiliest Scriptures existing. It is believed that there is a mysterious protective power emeneting from it towards those people who study and venerate it.

In the West, in contrast, the Sutra is rather less well known. Therefore, around ten years ago, the Abbot of the International Zen Temple, the Korean monk and Ven. Zen Master Young San Seong Do, prepared an English translation in order to make it more easily accessible for us Europeans. His profound experience in meditation and the thirty years he had spent studying teh Diamond Sutra flew into the translation. Sice then over the ten following years, the Ven. Zen Master has continuously worked on perfecting the translation.

The Zen Master has recently allowed this work to be released as a printed book. This really wonderfully designed edition contains the Zen Master's English translation, a German translation which was elaborated under his guidance and explanatory notes in English and German. It also contains as a facsimile, the Chinese text by Kumarajiva, dating from around 400 AD, which served as the source text for the Mahayana tradition. Hence, the German translation is the first one based an the Kumarajiva text.

This edition of the Diamond Sutra is not to be sold commercially. Its preparation and printing were funded solely through donations from the members of the International Zen Temple. If you are interested, please inform us and with great plesure we will send you a copy of the book.

The Diamond-Sutra
Spiritual and Cultural Chain Reaction
From: Cheong Am

02.05.2012

I am a member of the International Zen-Temple in Berlin, Germany, which was founded by the Korean monk and Zen master Young San Seong Do Snim around 12 years ago. At our temple many people from various European countries and even of other confessions practice the Korean "Gong-An Seon" under the guidance of Zen Master Young San Seong Do Snim.

For several years we feel that a growing number of people, especially here in Europe, shows earnest interest in practicing Zen. Of course, the Korean "Gong-An Seon" is just one of the path practicing Zen. This development is also imlying that more and more people are considering the Diamond Sutra as essence of Buddha's teaching and begin to understand its profound and mysterious truth.

Being aware of this Zen Master Young San Seong Do Snim tackled the extremely demanding task to translate the original Chinese text of "Keum Kang Kyung" into English. For his translation work he has put all of his energy and wisdom that he had attained during his 40 years intensive practice in "Gong-An Seon". His disciples have then translated this English version into German.

Shakyamuni Buddha taught the Diamond Sutra more than 2500 years ago, and it was Kumarajiva who translated it from Sanskrit into Chinese 1500 years ago. Historians say this was the beginning of an overwhelming spiritual and cultural chain reaction in China, Korea, Japan, Vietnam and many other Asian countries which is still going on.

Zen Master Young San Seong Do Snim's translation of the Diamond Sutra is true to Chinese original and should thus have achieved a highest degree of authenticity.
I personally hop people, in particular in Englidh- and German-speaking countries, find this translation precious to study for their own life. Furthermore, I hope its dissemination will be warmly accompanied by people with interest in cultivating Buddha mind.

I am very happy to share with you the Diamond Sutra translation and wish Buddha's blessings to you and your families.

In Dharma and kind regards!
